Millennium Square is about to get a lot more stars, as a touring planetarium sets up in the city centre for a month of space-themed screenings.
Planetarium Go UK arrives on the square from 4 to 26 September, running daily shows inside a portable dome using high-resolution digital projection. The programme includes 3-2-1 Lift Off (recommended 6+), From Earth to Universe (10+), Beyond the Sun (5+) and Voyager: The Never-Ending Story (5+), with screenings running 11am to 6pm Sunday to Friday and 10am to 8pm on Saturdays.
José Jiménez, chief executive of Planetarium Go UK, said the aim was to bring science to places it hasn’t reached before: “We want children, young people and families to enjoy an immersive experience that sparks scientific curiosity and brings the universe closer to everyday life, regardless of where they live.”
The dome forms part of a wider summer programme on the square, which has also hosted a well-attended series of outdoor concerts and performances this year. Councillor Salma Arif, the council’s executive member for economy, said giving families the chance to explore the wonders of space would “hopefully help to inspire the next generation of young scientists in Leeds.”
