Rainbow ‘buddy benches’ arrive in Linthorpe to help tackle loneliness

A colourful addition to a Linthorpe neighbourhood looks set to get people talking, as part of a new effort to help tackle loneliness and isolation.

The brightly painted benches, near the junction of Roman Road and Cambridge Road, are known as ‘buddy benches’ — an open invitation for passers-by to take five minutes to watch the world go by, or strike up a new acquaintance. They were given their rainbow makeover by Middlesbrough’s new Community Caretakers, and organisers hope more will follow.

The initiative was the brainchild of the Friends of Linthorpe community group, who hope the striking seats will encourage people to speak to one another.

Linthorpe resident Joely Dodsworth said: “Our new buddy benches are awesome.”

She added: “They’re a refreshing antidote to loneliness, an issue that is increasingly prevalent in our community.”

Councillor Philippa Storey, Linthorpe ward member, said: “These buddy benches are a brilliant idea by the Friends of Linthorpe and I really hope the bright, artistic colours encourage people to use the benches to sit and chat for a few minutes.”

She added: “I’d also like to thank the Community Caretakers who have done an amazing job.”
