Hundreds of people are expected at Roundhay Park this Saturday, 19 September, for St Gemma’s Hospice’s annual Sunset Walk, a 6K route in memory of loved ones that also raises money for the hospice.
Among those taking part this year is Katie Eshelby, walking in memory of her grandmother Margaret, who was cared for at St Gemma’s. Margaret was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2023, and one of her greatest wishes was to see Katie married — a wish she lived to see fulfilled, celebrating the wedding with family in October 2025, before her care needs led to a referral to St Gemma’s in her final weeks.
Katie said the staff “became an emotional support system for us as a family” and “went above and beyond to make sure Granny was comfortable and peaceful.”
This year’s walk follows a new route: the event village opens at 4.30pm, with walkers setting off at 6pm along a course that now takes in Street Lane before reaching St Gemma’s Hospice itself for a pause to reflect, then returning to the park.
Last year’s send-off was led by actress Gaynor Faye, and organisers note the walk’s sunset timing and walkers’ light-up accessories tend to make for striking photos. Registration remains open on the night itself, so anyone still wanting to take part can still sign up.
