Huddersfield has a new police station. The public enquiry counter at the building just off Broadway is now staffed and open Monday to Friday for residents wanting to report crime in person, and several key teams have moved in: Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing, Huddersfield South Patrol officers, and the Huddersfield Proactive Town Centre Team, all serving the local area directly.
It’s the second of two new stations Kirklees Police has opened this year, and the force says it draws a line under a rebuilding programme that has run for more than a decade. The first, Kirklees District Headquarters in Dewsbury, opened in early July. That multi-million-pound building was constructed on the former Kirklees College site and incorporates the college’s 19th-century Oldroyd building; alongside its own public helpdesk, it houses local Dewsbury policing teams, CID and other specialist units.
Final milestone
Superintendent Warren Pitman of Kirklees Police said the Huddersfield opening marked “a second and final milestone in the force’s long running programme to renew our estate in Kirklees.” He added: “It is no secret that the old police stations in Huddersfield and Dewsbury had reached the end of their lives and I think it is brilliant for communities that we’ve been able to invest in new buildings for them as part of wider regeneration in both towns.
“We always intended to maintain a full neighbourhood and response policing patrol presence in both towns and this new building gives us this opportunity to do exactly that in Huddersfield.”
The new station also houses a public enquiry desk, giving residents a direct route to report incidents to officers in person. Supt Pitman said he hoped the new development, alongside the continued presence of police buildings in Holmfirth and Heckmondwike and the new district headquarters in Dewsbury, would reassure residents that the force remains “absolutely steadfast in our commitment to keep policing in the heart of communities.”
