New cycle map launched to help people explore Hull

Hull City Council has launched a new cycle map to promote the benefits of cycling and help residents plan a journey by bike, whether for leisure, commuting to school or work, or short trips such as errands or visiting family and friends locally.

The city has an expanding network of on-road cycle lanes, off-road cycle tracks, quiet streets and open spaces, offering the chance to choose quicker, more convenient and cost-effective ways to travel. The new map includes an overall view of the city’s cycle network and its links to surrounding towns and villages, covering route types, safety and traffic information, cycling facilities, and public services and landmarks. It also features a city centre pull-out, information on the environmental and health and wellbeing benefits of cycling, details of where to find cycling services and support in Hull, and ten recommended routes.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “Residents tell us they want to cycle more, and our job is to make that easier and safer. People need routes they can trust and support they can access, whether they’re new to cycling or getting back on their bikes.”

He added: “Across the city we’re improving infrastructure and delivering a core cycling offer with our partners — from free training for young people and adults, to discounted repairs and refurbished bikes, to regular cycle-marking events with the police to help deter theft.

“This new cycle map brings all of that together. It gives people clear, well-connected routes and shows where to find the services that make cycling simple and enjoyable. It’s another practical step towards a cleaner, greener and healthier Hull.”

Cycle Forum’s support

The map was made possible thanks to the support and expertise of members of the Hull City Cycle Forum.

Kate Buurman, a local resident who works for the Sewell Group — one of the city’s most prominent employers, enrolled on Hull’s Modeshift STARS Business Programme and recognised nationally for promoting active and sustainable travel — said: “I cycle for both commuting and leisure in Hull because it’s a simple, sustainable way to get around while clearing my head and enjoying the city.”

She added: “The new cycle map will make it much easier to find well-connected routes, helping more people feel confident cycling across Hull.”

The map can be downloaded via the Travel Hull website, and printed copies are available for free from various council buildings, including libraries, leisure centres, tourist information points and customer service centres.
