12 new sculptures have taken up residence across York as part of a new trail called The Watchers of York, launched on 29 June by Make It York in collaboration with York Minster.
Inspired by the carved grotesques high above York Minster, each Watcher is a protective character tied to a different part of the city’s story — some keeping watch over the rivers, others guarding green spaces and gateways, and several stationed along York’s historic streets. Every sculpture has its own personality and purpose, reflected in where it’s been placed.
Each of the 12 has been individually designed and painted by a different artist, charity or group of art students, with every design inspired by a different facet of York’s history, character and cultural identity.
The trail runs until 31 August 2026, inviting residents and visitors to explore the city guided by its newest set of guardians.
