Hull City Council announced yesterday that essential roadworks will begin on Hull’s George Street this month to install underground pipework for the Hull Heat Network, a council project bringing low-carbon heating and hot water to businesses across the city centre.
The works run from Monday 17 August to Sunday 6 September, connecting a central energy centre under construction on Trippett Street to buildings in the city centre. George Street will be closed between the Wilberforce Drive and Freetown Way junctions for the duration, with access to Charlotte Street Mews maintained via a reversed one-way route from Grimston Street; George Street car park will stay open throughout. Works are expected to run 7:30am to 5pm on weekdays, though some evening or weekend work may be required, and dates may change depending on weather.
Chris Jackson, Hull City Council’s Executive Director for Regeneration and Partnerships, said: “These works are an important step towards delivering a cleaner, more sustainable city. We are working to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and thank residents and businesses for their patience while we conduct these essential works.”
The project, delivered by contractor Vital Energi, will supply heat to 38 buildings in its first phase and is expected to save an estimated 110,000 tonnes of CO2 over 40 years.
