Award-winning designers announced for new Horatio’s Garden at Pinderfields Hospital

Award-winning landscape designer Joe Perkins and architect Clementine Blakemore have been announced as the team behind Horatio’s Garden Yorkshire, a new therapeutic garden opening at Pinderfields Hospital.

The garden, the tenth created by the Horatio’s Garden charity, will support patients rehabilitating at the Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, one of only 11 specialist spinal injuries centres in England, as well as their families, friends and NHS staff. Perkins and Blakemore recently visited the centre to meet patients and staff and gather insights that will shape the garden’s design.

Perkins, an award-winning landscape designer with more than 25 years’ experience and multiple RHS accolades, said: “Working with Horatio’s Garden means we’re going to make a real difference.”

Blakemore, founder of Clementine Blakemore Architects, an award-winning practice, is designing the garden room and pods; she said the aim is to create “a sensitive environment that is an antidote to the clinical feeling of the hospital,” somewhere families can spend proper time together away from a clinical setting.

Keith Ramsay, Chair of Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said: “We know the positive difference that access to nature can make to people’s wellbeing.”
