Barnsley businesses are being asked to get involved in a new event connecting local schools with the borough’s digital career opportunities, aimed at helping teachers better understand the sector.
Ctrl + Alt + Learn: Digital Careers takes place on Thursday 1 October, 1pm to 4.45pm, hosted across the Digital Media Centre and Barnsley College’s SciTech Centre. It brings together headteachers, careers advisers and curriculum staff from primary and secondary schools to explore the digital career pathways open to young people in the borough, with digital and technology businesses invited to take part by running marketplace stalls and sharing what they do.
Organisers say the event is designed to strengthen ties between local schools and industry, helping staff better understand nearby opportunities so they can encourage pupils towards careers in one of Barnsley’s fastest-growing sectors. The programme includes talks from TECH SY, a business marketplace of local employers and providers, virtual reality demonstrations, a visit to DMC02, and tours of Barnsley College’s Digital and Creative Industries and e-sports departments. Barnsley has been officially recognised as the UK’s first Tech Town, with the Digital Media Centre and SciTech Centre supporting everything from start-ups to established tech firms.
A strong reputation
Councillor Luke Wheat, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets, said: “Barnsley has built a strong reputation as the UK’s first Tech Town, with a thriving digital and technology sector creating exciting opportunities for local people. Through the Great Childhoods Ambition, we want every child and young person to grow up believing they can achieve great things and have access to the opportunities that will help them succeed.
“However, many young people and school staff are not yet aware of the fantastic digital careers available right here in our borough. This event will help bridge that gap by bringing together schools and employers to showcase the huge range of opportunities within the sector. We’re looking for businesses to join us, share their experiences and inspire the next generation of talent.”
