Selby fire station’s open day, due to take place this Sunday (16 August 2026), has been cancelled due to the ongoing hot weather and work taking place at the station.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews had been exceptionally busy over the past week responding to a high number of operational incidents, and apologised for any disappointment the cancellation may cause.
The Service used the announcement to renew its fire safety advice during the current prolonged spell of hot, dry weather: taking a picnic into the countryside instead of a disposable barbecue, campfire or camping stove; taking litter home, especially glass bottles and jars; disposing of cigarettes responsibly; positioning any barbecue at home well away from sheds, fences, trees and other combustible materials; and avoiding garden bonfires while the ground and vegetation remain so dry.
The cancellation comes as North Yorkshire continues to grapple with elevated wildfire risk, a week that has also seen the anniversary of the Langdale/Fylingdales Moor wildfire marked, and a national Emergency Alert issued warning of a very high risk of wildfires.
