Middlesbrough Council has installed new CCTV cameras and columns at six locations across Albert Park, alongside upgrades to existing cameras, in a safety boost for one of the town’s most popular public spaces.
Albert Park is a major attraction for visitors of all ages, and this weekend hosts the internationally renowned Middlesbrough Mela. The new cameras are directly linked to the town’s CCTV control room, with some featuring the loudspeaker system previously launched in the town centre, which drew interest from around the world.
The move has been welcomed by Mayor Chris Cooke as part of his drive to make the town a thriving, healthy, safe and ambitious place.
CCTV “a powerful tool”
Councillor Ian Blades, the council’s executive member for neighbourhoods, said: “Our historic parks draw people from across Middlesbrough and beyond, offering everything from world class events to a chance walk the dog and enjoy some fresh air. The safety and security of those using them is of paramount importance, and CCTV is a powerful tool in protecting law-abiding members of the community.”
Mayor Chris Cooke said: “I know how strongly the public feel about safety in our parks and open spaces, and that’s why it’s one of my key priorities. Our CCTV network is rightly renowned for the role it plays in deterring and detecting crime and antisocial behaviour, and these new cameras are a welcome addition.”
