Elite cycling teams to race through East Riding in Tour of Britain

Eighteen elite cycling teams, including the world’s number one ranked team, UAE Team Emirates – XRG, will race through Hull and the East Riding on Friday 4 September as part of the Lloyds Tour of Britain, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said yesterday.

The men’s stage departs East Park in Hull for a 198km route with 1,612m of climbing, heading out along the coast through Withernsea, Hornsea and Skipsea, then on to Burton Agnes, before a series of climbs through Driffield and down into Wetwang.

The stage finishes with a 16km circuit around Beverley, including a testing uphill finish to the racecourse.

The field includes five UCI WorldTour teams, the Great Britain Cycling Team making its 19th appearance in its home Tour, British team Netcompany INEOS competing for a 16th consecutive year, and Belgian team Soudal Quick-Step, the most successful team in modern Tour of Britain history.

Showcasing the region

Councillor Anne Handley, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Leader, said: “We’re thrilled that elite cycling teams from across the world are set to compete in the East Riding, showcasing the best of our region. We encourage residents and visitors to take advantage and attend this premier sporting event.”

Race Director Jonny Clay said: “With experienced teams and exciting emerging talent all represented, fans coming to watch can look forward to five days of world-class, competitive racing at the Lloyds Tour of Britain.

“The line-up will showcase what makes Britain such a special place to race, producing some entertaining racing across five challenging stages. We look forward to another memorable edition of the Lloyds Tour of Britain that celebrates the best of cycling in this country.”
