A new enforcement partnership aimed at tackling littering and dog fouling is now operating across Sheffield, bringing more uniformed officers onto the city’s streets, parks and neighbourhoods.
Sheffield City Council has joined forces with City of Doncaster Council and specialist provider Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement Ltd (WISE) to deliver a dedicated proactive enforcement service across the city.
The officers will carry out patrols in areas known for littering and dog fouling, issuing Fixed Penalty Notices to those caught committing offences, while the council’s existing environmental enforcement officers continue their wider protection duties.
The arrangement follows a review of enforcement options; the council previously relied on temporary and agency staff for proactive litter enforcement, which brought its own financial and administrative challenges. WISE already provides similar services to more than 40 local authorities, including Doncaster, Rotherham, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.
Richard Eyre, the council’s Director of Street Scene and Regulation, said: “Residents rightly expect clean streets, parks and neighbourhoods, and most people take pride in their local area. Unfortunately, a small minority continue to spoil our city by dropping litter or failing to clean up after their dogs. This new partnership means people will see more enforcement officers out in communities across Sheffield.
“Their role is to tackle these offences, issue fines where appropriate and help make it clear that littering and dog fouling will not be tolerated. By increasing our enforcement activity, we can better protect the places people live, work and visit, while creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment for everyone.”
Residents can continue to report littering, fly-tipping and other environmental issues through the council’s website.
