Leeds Rhinos legend Sir Kevin Sinfield has been announced as the voice of The Giant in the Carriageworks Theatre’s family pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, marking the rugby league icon’s panto debut.
The former Leeds Rhinos captain recorded his lines at Leeds-based Our House Studio this week, lending his voice to the fairytale antagonist. The show, produced in partnership with Paul Holman Associates, runs at the Carriageworks Theatre from Friday 20 November 2026 until Sunday 3 January 2027, promising stunning costumes, musical numbers, audience participation and a story about bravery, family and believing in yourself.
Recently knighted, Sir Kevin is celebrated across Yorkshire and beyond for his sporting career and his fundraising for Motor Neurone Disease charities, and has raised more than £11 million in memory of his late friend and former teammate Rob Burrow, who died from MND in 2024. He is currently preparing for his final fundraising challenge in Burrow’s honour, running an ultra-marathon every day for seven days in September, and has donated his panto fee to the charity. Both Sir Kevin and Rob Burrow were awarded the Freedom of Leeds, the city’s highest civic honour, in 2022.
Very special place
Speaking about his panto debut, Sir Kevin said: “Leeds has been such a huge part of my life, professionally and personally, and the city will always hold a very special place in my heart. I’ve faced a few giants in my rugby career, but voicing The Giant is a new kind of challenge, and having the chance to be part of Christmas for all the families that will be paying a visit to the Carriageworks Theatre over the festive season is a real privilege. I can’t wait for audiences to come along, boo The Giant and enjoy what will undoubtedly be a fantastic show.”
Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, said: “Sir Kevin is quite rightly a hero to the people of Leeds and a true inspiration both for his sporting accomplishments and his tireless charity work, so we’re thrilled to welcome him to the Carriageworks Theatre family. Hearing a local legend’s voice shake the auditorium as our giant is going to make this production extra special for all the families enjoying Christmas in Leeds this year.”
